12 Owensboro Health • March 2018 Helping people find Freedom From Smoking ® Overcoming addiction is the goal at Owensboro Regional Recovery, and now those being treated there are getting some help to kick another habit: tobacco. Owensboro Regional Recovery, which is a program run by Audubon Area Community Services, is one of the recipients of Owensboro Health’s 2017 Community Health Investment Grants. The grant funding supports Owensboro Regional Recovery’s implementation of the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking course. Participants are helped with resources, including the Kentucky Quit Now Line, which helps participants get access to free nicotine replacement supplies. “We really want them to make this their choice,” said Sarah Adkins, director of Owensboro Regional Recovery. “If they’re ready to quit smoking, we want to give them the information and the tools to do that.” No single quit-smoking technique is effective for all smokers, this program includes a comprehensive variety of evidence-based quitting techniques. Besides support, our program offers a structured, systematic approach to quitting, emphasizing the benefits of better health through positive messaging. Evaluation studies have shown that people who participate in Freedom From Smoking ® : • Experience immediate health benefits • Learn to address the physical, mental and social aspects of their addiction • Are six times more likely to be smoke-free one year later than those who quit on their own • When used in combination with nicotine replacement medication, up to 60% of participants report having quit smoking by the end of the program.
