of Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital Heather Garrett, MD Title: Hospitalist medical director at OHMCH High school: Muhlenberg North High School Undergraduate: Bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry at Western Kentucky University Medical school: University of Kentucky College of Medicine Residency: Family medicine at University of Louisville; pediatrics at Norton Children’s Hospital Q: Why did you become a doctor? A: I first said I wanted to be a doctor when I was only 5 years old. Seeing a grandmother with COPD and dying of lung cancer opened my eyes to medicine at an early age. Q: How does it feel to practice here? A: I am thankful to get to practice in my hometown. Most of my family lives in Muhlenberg County, so it made sense for me to come back home. Q: What is it like to do your job? A: I love being there for patients and their families in their biggest times of need. It’s such a blessing to have a career where I do what I love every day. Q: What do you do when you aren’t working? A: Our four children, ages 3 to 9, keep us busy all the time! We love to travel and spend time together as a family. I also love reading and writing. I am currently working on my second children’s book. My husband and I also founded a nonprofit organization, Know Hope, to provide adoption grants to Kentucky families who are adopting.
