“Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital, this is Debra. How may I help you?” Approximately 200 times per day, Debra Martin answers the ringing phones at the hospital with a headset over her ears and a smile on her face. She has been the voice of the hospital for patients’ families, community members and anyone needing to contact the hospital’s switchboard for the last 26 years. She is a friendly voice, welcoming presence and calming influence in the face of uncertain situations. In addition to answering the phone, Debra also takes payments from customers and announces codes over the hospital’s overhead speakers. Debra enjoys helping people feel at ease. “If a customer walks in worried or upset about their bill, I think greeting them with a smile and a helpful attitude makes a difference,” Debra said. “It makes me feel good when someone calls and says ‘I was hoping you would answer.’” Most phone calls are quick and easy to handle, but Debra has had some unforgettable calls as well. “My most memorable phone call came from a truck driver who was driving on the parkway and having chest pains. He was unable to pull over and call 911, so I stayed on the phone with him and directed him on how to get to our facility. He was able to make it to our emergency room safely and receive the medical treatment he needed.” The next time you call the hospital, whether it’s to speak with a patient or to make an appointment, there’s a good chance you will hear Debra’s friendly voice on the other end of the line.
